The Dream Of The Open Society Still Drives George Soros

The philanthropic work of George Soros has often taken him to far flung regions of the world to push forward his own idea of opening up closed societies and bringing freedom to all the people of the planet. In a recent article published by The Atlantic, the Hungarian born hedge fund manager explained his belief in the similarities between the politics of the turn of the 21st-century and those of the first decades of the 20th-century leading up to World War II. George Soros believes his own belief in the open society first identified by philosopher Henri Bergson and brought to the mainstream by Soros’ own mentor Karl Popper; the Austrian philosopher believed a totalitarian regime was always destined to fail as it believed it owned the rights to the ultimate truth, an idea that is completely implausible. George Soros established the Open Society Foundations.

Unlike the years following World War II, the main threat to freedom around the world cannot be seen as the rise of Communism and Fascism, but instead, is limited to the problems of a disinterest in political reform in favor of a dedicated push towards the capitalist threat identified by George Soros. Over the course of his philanthropic career, Soros has found his work often stalled by the threat of totalitarian regimes and the fact his own efforts to support freedom have often been twisted by ruling government agencies to further their own ends. The founder of the Open Society Foundations has seen a rising threat posed by the idea that capitalism is the only plausible option for the continued growth of society across the democratic world, a situation he feels reveals the cracks in society found in the leading free nation in the world, the U.S. Because of the quest to become ever more interested in the work completed in pursuit of the capitalist ideal, Soros believes areas such as social justice, economic stability, and international relations are all suffering as major financial donors become more involved in U.S. politics than ever before.
