It is a heartbreaking situation when you feel when you finally receive justice only to watch it snatched out of your hands. It is like the person who finds out they’re cancer free only to later to realize the results were wrong and have the disease return in all its power.
This sort of situation happened to Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. For many years they have been pushing for judicial action against the Maricopa County Sheriff Joseph Arpaio. Unfortunately, President Donald Trump got elected to the office and he used this power to pardon this cruel Sheriff and allow him to continue his reign of terror throughout the state of Arizona. Even worse, Sheriff Joseph Arpaio is now considering a Senatorial bid.
Why exactly do Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin want justice to be enacted against Sheriff Joseph Arpaio? It begins with the fact that Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin advocate for immigrant rights while Sheriff Joseph Arpaio does everything he can to treat them like scum and animals.
Sheriff Joseph Arpaio likes to go around proclaiming that he is “America’s Toughest Sheriff.” He is proud of the fact that he takes such a hard line when it comes to the issue of immigration. However, that word tough can mean many different things. In the case of Sheriff Joseph Arpaio, and means brutality of the worst kind.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin have reported on just a few of these brutal acts conducted by Sheriff Joseph Arpaio. By analyzing emails and memos going through out the Maricopa County Police Department, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were able to report confidently that Sheriff Joseph Arpaio demanded that his officers racially profile Hispanic men and women.
Michael and Jim also reported through the Phoenix New Times that Sheriff Joseph Arpaio highly encouraged to security guards to mistreat the Hispanic or Latino communities. This was not only confirmed by letters written inside the prison system but also by security guards who no longer work for Sheriff Arpaio. This mistreatment occurred in the form beatings and even turning a blind eye to suicides.
The two men also reported through the Phoenix New Times that Sheriff Joseph Arpaio chained a pregnant woman to the bed in her jail cell when she was complaining of pain in her abdomen. This is because she was going into early labor but he did not want to provide her a Doctor. Needless to say, the baby did not make it.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were recipients of the tyrannical spirit that is characteristic of Sheriff Arpaio. He failed to garner sympathy in the District Court and could not get a subpoena for these two men.
In response, he made his men wait outside their homes to unlawfully arrest them the moment they show themselves. This resulted in a grave violation of the First Amendment and a hefty lawsuit against the Maricopa County.
