When victims of Joe Arpaio discovered that he was convicted of criminal contempt of court, they didn’t expect him to serve a single day in jail. The 85 year old former sheriff was expected to weasel his way out of jail time in some way or another, but no one expected him to be pardoned by the President of the United States. Donald Trump has done just that and some say the reason is obvious: to gain supporters.
Michael Lacey echoed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s remarks about Trump by calling him a moron for going through with the pardon.
Despite Arpaio’s numerous constitutional violations and abundant criminal activity, he still has a lot of fans in Arizona. By pardoning Arpaio, Michael Lacey says Trump is attempting to reach Arpaio’s fan-base.
It is no secret that Arpaio and Trump share supporters, so by pardoning Arpaio, Trump aims to satisfy the desires of Republican voters. Since the pardoning, Joe Arpaio has said that he plans to run for Congress.
Joe Larkin and Michael Lacey, two of Arpaio’s victims are doing everything in their power to stop Arpaio from ever being elected to public office again. After they were awarded nearly 4 million dollars from a lawsuit stemming from an unlawful arrest made under orders from Arpaio, the two men have created a brand new publication: Front Page Confidential. When you visit the web page for their new paper, you will be hard-pressed to find a day when Joe Arpaio isn’t mentioned on the front page. If Arpaio does make a bid for a Senate Seat in 2018, no doubt, Lacey and Larkin will be utilizing their newspaper to prevent him from winning.
Front Page Confidential has been in operation since August 2017 and its content is primarily composed of news stories on civil rights issues. Larkin and Lacey have stated that they intend to use the newly found paper to inform their audience on issues relating to the first amendment and other prominent issues we are currently facing as a nation. Who are Larkin and Lacey?
The two journalist met in college at Arizona State University and decided to drop out together once their college campus newspaper took off. They converted their school paper into a real locally circulated publication and have no regrets in not finishing school.
The two worked hard and have been very successful in the newspaper publishing industry. In 2013 they sold their original publication, The Phoenix New Times, and along with their settlement in the unlawful arrest controversy, they have started Front Page Confidential and The Frontera Fund.
By using both of these organizations, Larkin and Lacey have pledged to fight oppressive actions like those initiated by former sheriff Joe Arpaio. In addition to their efforts in the newspaper publishing industry, Larkin and Lacey plan to fight for migrant-rights and inform immigrants on policy with The Frontera Fund.
